Resolutions From the Ukambani Professionals Caucus Meeting
GKC was part and parcel of the Ukambani Professionals Meeting convened and hosted by H.E The Governor of Machakos County, Dr. Alfred N. Mutua, EBS at the Kenyatta Stadium Grounds.
The main talking points of the conference constituting various professionals drawn from within the region and beyond were:
- Developing the Ukambani Region together for the benefit of our people
- Maendeleo Chap Chap background and philosophy
- Exchange of ideas
- Unity and economic prosperity of the region.
A statement from the governor on the accord from the meeting detailed an agreement to form the Professionals Mashinani Caucus purposed to observe unity in order to realize professional development.
The meeting also observed the need to alleviate the scourge of unemployment amongst the youth and also highlighted the need for swift development in view of providing basic needs such as food, water and education whilst increasing trade and commerce.
An Ukambani Bank also provided a topic of deliberation. The proposed bank would be able to provide affordable credit to residents in purpose of developing the region’s economy.
Development of the Ukambani Region through agricultural activities was discussed with professionals tasking the governor with considering projects that would harness the waters of the Athi River. A Lower Easter Economic Bloc was considered to catalyze development and economic growth.
The meeting highlighted the need to observe ‘politics of action’ rather the age-old practice of empty assurances by seasoned politicians that had seen the region fall behind in terms of development.
A resolution was also made to create a civic educational drive to create awareness on the conclusions of the Ukamabani Professionals Meeting. This would serve to ensure that the people were interactively part of the agreements made.
The Ukambani region, being famed for its fruit production, will have a fruit processing plant set up to cater for the farmers who will now have an option of processing their products into juices and jams instead of selling their raw produce. An agricultural technology and industrial training center will also be set up.
It was resolved that the professionals would be in a position to form sector specific committees that would advise sectors such as education, roads, investment and industrialization, tourism, water and health at the regional, county, constituency and ward levels.
Youth programs and talent development will be supported through financial backing and mentorship.
The meeting also invited constructive critique from the professionals who are opinion leaders in their respective sub-counties. This would foster progressive leadership and spur development.
An interim steering committee made up of professionals hailing from Ukambani Counties would be set up. H.E Dr. Alfred N. Mutua, EBS would be the patron of the Ukambani Professional Caucus.
In conclusion, the meeting decided that the next Ukambani Professionals Caucus meeting would be held in September at a venue to be communicated.
